The preferred hiring range is between $19.42 and $24.79 an hour. Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. This is a grant-funded non-exempt Full-Time position. Youth Counselor positions provides direct services to children and/or families which includes but is not limited to: individual, group, and family counseling, skill-building, and other therapeutic and case management services. Does related work as required. Primarily and most frequently the work done here is under general supervision, with related functional areas and more advanced applications.
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Minimally, a high school diploma or GED plus four years of highly relevant experience may be substituted as equivalent.

Minimum of one year of experience working in the field of human services.

Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia or qualified and able to obtain a valid VA driver’s license prior to beginning the position. Proof of insurance required. Job Duties
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
- Provides for the physical and emotional safety of participants and helps create a positive environment.
- Creates and/or participates in the coordination and implementation of treatment or assessment planning.
- Performs informal individual counseling, as well as crises intervention counseling.
- Provides therapeutic structure while supervising participants during completion of tasks and activities as needed.
- Provides crisis management in emergency situations.
- May develop and/or facilitate, lead, or co-lead various group meetings and/or recreational and educational activities.
- Coordinates with other agency staff on treatment observations and information.
- Maintains case records and prepares reports.
- Participates in overall program planning and evaluation.
- Attends staff meetings and other required meetings.
- May screen youth for program eligibility.
- May perform some case management duties, which may include but is not limited to coordination with community partners, families, school staff, probation, and social service agencies.
- May have responsibility for a support function, which may include but is not limited: equipment maintenance, stocking inventories of supplies, and oversight of vehicle maintenance.
- May transport program participants.
- May assist in the training of Youth Counselor Assistants, volunteers and student interns.
- Provides on-call overage.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Skills Required
General knowledge of counseling and social work principles and practices particularly as related to adolescent behavior; general knowledge of community services and facilities available for adolescents; knowledge of crisis intervention and behavior change techniques; ability to develop care and treatment plans for adolescents suffering emotional and social problems; ability to communicate effectively orally and written; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with adolescents, other employees, officials and the general public; Models a positive attitude and solution orientation towards problems and decisions; ability to maintain records and prepare detailed reports. Ability to apply trauma-informed care and practices; ability to create an inclusive and equitable work environment; ability to maintain high quality services based on inclusive and equitable practices. Ability to develop rapport with families while balancing discretion and confidentiality when engaging in difficult conversations.
