The City of Charlottesville is seeking a seasoned, thoughtful leader to be its next City Attorney. Our new City Attorney will have a passion for people and public service, and the organizational skills to effectively direct a talented group of attorneys as they address the many challenges facing local government.

The City of Charlottesville is underway with a paradigm shift in the way that it provides services to its diverse population. Recent retirements, natural attrition and newly created positions of several key leadership posts have positioned the City to be able to make a major organizational culture change in serving our community and meeting the contemporary needs of our governmental staff. The City of Charlottesville is currently recruiting leaders to fill these positions.

The City Attorney performs complex professional and responsible administrative work in overseeing the civil and legal affairs of the City. The City Attorney’s Office provides legal counsel and representation to the Charlottesville City Council, City Manager, city departments, and city-appointed boards and commissions in legal actions filed by or against them. The office provides legal advice at City Council meetings, performs legal research and offers advisory opinions to its clients, and responds to requests from the City Council and city staff to draft or review contracts, ordinances, and other legal documents. The City Attorney will perform those tasks as directed by the City Council and City Manager.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited law school of recognized standing.
  • Requires a minimum of ten (10) years of experience as a practicing attorney. At least five (5) of those years must have been in the practice of municipal law. In addition, must have a minimum of four years of management and supervisory experience.
  • Eligibility to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
