Description

The Chief Operating Officer plays a key role at the Center for Open Science in helping shape and deliver on the strategic imperatives of the organization. Reporting to the Executive Director, the COO is a member of a 7-person leadership team and has primary responsibility for the organization’s financial management, business operations, software development, staff performance, and goal setting. This role works closely with the ED and leadership team to determine strategies to best fulfill the organization's mission - to increase openness, integrity, and reproducibility of research.

Job Duties

We’re looking for some or all of the following qualities:
  • 10+ years of professional experience in operations and management
  • A strategic thinker who understands how operations and finances support the broader mission of the organization 
  • Depth of experience in managing teams, supporting cross-functional collaboration, developing staff, and setting clear goals
  • Experience in software, research, or policy/advocacy a plus 
  • Proven ability to forecast financial models, control expenses, while supporting organizational growth 
  • Experience in nonprofit financial management; experience with government contracts, a plus. Knowledge of GAAP and accrual-based accounting practices. Experience with annual audits 
  • Experience in revenue development strategies, including earned revenue and/or fundraising strategies
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 

Skills Required

This position directly manages a team of five (Financial Controller, HR Manager, Operations Manager, Director of Product, and Director of Engineering). S/he works in close partnership with the Director of Development, Director of Research, and Director of Policy. The work of the COO falls into four main categories: Finance
  • Monitor COS’s financial performance and develop long range financial plans that align with the organization's strategic priorities
  • Develop annual, multi-year, and project/grant budgets 
  • Manage government contract revenue and restricted funds usage
  • Act as liaison with the Board Finance Committee
  • Oversee monthly and annual financial reporting, including the conduct of an annual audit and federal single audit
  • Review and approve financial transactions. Manage banking relationships and investment accounts
Business Operations
  • Develop scopes of work and manage deliverables for external partnerships
  • Oversee and ensure accuracy of payroll, employee benefits, business insurance. Ensure compliance with all labor law and employment practices
  • Oversee process for performance evaluations and compensation review. Support recruitment and talent retention strategies.
  • Handle all contracts, including grant agreements, business and vendor contracts, subcontracts, and federal agreements. Ensure compliance with federal procurement standards when applicable. Reviews all legal documents and Terms of Services
  • Establish fee schedules and evaluate cost and effectiveness of earned revenue programs 
  • Manage physical facilities and assets
  • Identify, select, and work with consultants (e.g. legal, financial, HR) to supplement expertise when necessary
  • Serves as the Research Integrity Officer (RIO), Authorized Organizational Representative (AOR) for grants, and DMCA agent
Engineering & Product
  • Manage the work of the Product and Engineering teams, ensuring that the software team works together with clear guidance on developing software solutions that support the organization's mission 
  • Monitor team performance, help to develop scopes of work, track progress on new development, and support adequate resourcing needs for the teams’ ranked project priorities list
Leadership & management
  • Help establish and track progress towards organization-wide goals 
  • Actively participate in the development of funding proposals and new initiatives
  • Engage with the Board of Directors, primary funders, and other key external stakeholders around organizational impact and plans for the future

Additional Info

Salary range $120,000-$130,000, commensurate with experience. COS offers full time employees:
  • 401(k) with employer match. COS offers a matching contribution of 100% up to 3% of pay and another 50% up to 5% of pay (the full match will be 4% if participants elect to defer 5%)
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance. COS covers 100% of employee premium and 50% of all dependent coverage costs under the base plan
