Job Title: Chief Executive Officer

The Martha Jefferson House (MJHouse) is a nonprofit senior living community located in the heart of Charlottesville, Virginia. The MJHouse provides independent living, assisted living and nursing care for approximately 60 residents. Our community is centered on a 1920s Georgian-style mansion and surrounded by beautiful gardens and grounds.

Establishing and sustaining a homelike setting where each resident lives well and thrives together in a senior-oriented community.

Duties and responsibilities of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO):

Under the direction and guidance of the Board of Directors, the CEO has the following duties and responsibilities:

• Ensure that all employees and staff support and sustain the MJ House mission.

• Work effectively with the MJHouse Board of Directors and Board committees. Lead and manage the MJHouse in a manner that supports and sustains its mission. Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions. Work effectively with the Board to set annual and strategic organizational goals.

• Ensure that the MJHouse complies with local, state, and federal Assisted Living and Nursing regulations.

• Cultivate enduring relationships with residents and families. Demonstrate passion for working with seniors.

• Ensure that the MJHouse upholds its commitment to residents in providing services and programs. Assure that the highest degree of quality care, services and programs are provided to residents in accordance with government regulations and company policies.

• Support the MJHouse’s commitment to being an employer of choice. Hiring, supporting and developing competent and qualified staff. Lead and manage a team of approximately 70 employees. Cultivate a culture of excellence, teamwork, and resident-centric care among our devoted staff.

• Maintain and improve the MJHouse’s financial stability. Manage an annual budget of approximately $7 Million. Work closely with the Development Director, Business Manager, and contracted Chief Financial Officer to provide monthly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization. Responsible for fiscal management that anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position. Ensures completion of annual audit.

• Help raise funds needed to support the MJHouse’s annual operating budget and to fund capital projects. Work closely with the Board to support fundraising activities and pursue other resources necessary to support the agency’s mission.

• Enhance the MJHouse’s image by being active and visible in the community and by working closely with local professional, civic, and private organizations.

Qualifications, Skills, Experience:
• License: Candidates must hold an active Virginia Nursing Home Administrator License or be in the process of getting licensed as a Virginia Nursing Home Administrator.

• Background check: Must successfully pass criminal background check as part of application process

• Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher, preferably in business administration, finance, or health care related field, or equivalent.

• Leadership Skills: Ability to interface and engage diverse resident, staff, volunteer and donor groups. A talent for developing strong interpersonal relationships and consensus building is required.

• Management Skills: Demonstrated potential to lead, manage and develop staff.

• Senior Living Experience: Experience at the executive level with senior living community or a related field. Passion for working with seniors.

• Nonprofit Experience: Experience working for a nonprofit organization. Ability to work effectively with a Board of Directors and Board committees. Knowledge of nonprofit fundraising and donor relations strategies. Ability to oversee grant proposals, fundraising events, annual giving campaign and major donor cultivation.

• Communications Skills: Strong written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated public speaking ability.

• Organizational Skills: Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation. Excellent time management skills.

• Fiscal Management: Solid, hands-on, budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting.

• Interpersonal Skills: Ability to work independently, as a team member, and/or a team leader. Ability to perform work in a creative, energetic, and self-directive manner.

• Agile: Keeps up with industry and market trends. Innovates in ways that differentiate our offerings.

• Information Technology Skills: Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to work with Microsoft Office, Outlook, and other web-based technology.

Work Hours: This is a salaried position with an expectation of a 40 hour per week position. The agency core operating hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, however some weekends and evening appointments may be required, including attendance at board meetings that may occur outside normal operating hours.

Salary Range: Exempt, salary range $140,000-$160,000.
