The Charlottesville Department of Social Services is seeking qualified candidates to join our team for the position of Benefit Programs Specialist who are highly motivated and who strive for success by demonstrating Charlottesville’s Core Values of Leadership, Trust, Creativity, Respect, and Excellence.
The preferred hiring amount will be between $19.42 and $30.16 an hour ($40,394.46 to $62,732.80 annually). Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. This is a full-time, non-exempt, position. The position also provides excellent benefits including 13 paid holidays, paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, City’s retirement options, gym reimbursement program, and continuing education/training opportunities.

  • The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS, however the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS and there are certain provisions that must be met. Minimum Requirements: 

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Experience working in a human services setting.
  • At least 1 year experience with case management/computer databases required.
  • Experience working with a socially and economically diverse population.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word required.

  • Selected candidate will be required to complete a criminal background investigation, a Child Protective Service check, and complete a pre-employment drug screening.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a human services field or a combination of related education and experience equivalent to a degree is preferred.
  • Experience working in human service/social services, determining eligibility for client services, particularly with benefit programs such as Medicaid, SNAP and/or other public assistance programs in the state of Virginia.
  • Proficiency in speaking and writing in second language preferred.
