The University of Virginia is a public research institution located in Charlottesville, Virginia. Virginia Athletics sponsors a twenty-seven sport intercollegiate athletics program, which includes approximately 750 student-athletes. UVA has recently launched its most ambitious fundraising effort in its 200+ year history with the $5B Honor the Future comprehensive campaign.

The Department of Athletics seeks an Associate Director of Development. Reporting to the Director of Athletics, the Associate Director will work in close coordination with the Virginia Athletics Foundation and University Advancement. As a member of the team, the Associate Director will be responsible for identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of new major and principal gift prospective donors.

The Associate Director will pursue philanthropic support to advance the athletics departments overall fundraising priorities and strategic engagement initiatives with a specific emphasis on identifying new donors interested in supporting the Virginia Athletics Master Plan. In this role, the Associate Director will be donor-centric in their approach and work collaboratively to build strong relationships and coalitions across the Grounds with advancement colleagues, not only in the Virginia Athletics Foundation, but within University Advancement, and our schools/units.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work actively to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward new major and principal gifts donors.
  • Work actively to establish and re-establish connections to inactive donors.
  • Execute strategic fundraising plan with short- and long-range goals to the expand donor base.
  • Work with Director of Athletics and/or other leaders to cultivate and solicit lead gifts to high-profile athletics projects.
  • Build and maintain key relationships in support of philanthropic efforts for the department of athletics.
  • Identify and partner with key constituents to leverage corporate and foundation fundraising opportunities.
  • Analyze and utilize prospect research data and insights to identify fundraising opportunities.
  • Conduct face-to face gift solicitations on an ongoing basis to meet fundraising objectives.
  • Create and maintain a portfolio of donor prospects.
  • Manage and appropriately document prospect contacts, solicitations, and proposals.
  • Adhere to University and University Advancement policies and protocols.

Skills Required

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s Degree

Experience: Minimum of five years of experience in higher education, college athletics, professional sports, a non-profit organization, sales, talent recruitment or similar industry.

Licensure: Valid driver’s license.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to build relationships, collaborate, and work effectively with diverse constituents.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Demonstrated philanthropic values and commitment to service.
  • Ability to travel nationally (when permitted) and work evenings and weekends, as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A passion for advancing the mission of college athletics.
  • Prior experience in higher education, college athletics, professional sports, a non-profit organization, sales, talent recruitment or similar industry.
  • Track record of demonstrating a high degree of initiative, flexibility and will have the skills to shape and be shaped by evolving fundraising initiatives.
  • Experience using data to evaluate and plan.
