Assistant to the Executive and Artistic Directors

For 40 years, Charlottesville Opera, formerly Ash Lawn Opera, has produced opera and other musical performances in beautiful and historic Charlottesville, VA, first at Ash Lawn-Highland and now at the beautifully renovated Paramount Theater in the heart of downtown. Charlottesville Opera also provides a wide range of education programs for youth and adults; professional training for emerging artists and interns; and seeks to enrich the cultural vitality and quality of life in Virginia and the mid-Atlantic region. The company has an annual budget over $900,000, with three productions at The Paramount Theater and numerous Young Artist outreach performances.

This is an excellent opportunity for a fast-paced administrator to learn about and be involved in all aspects of an arts organization including PR/marketing, development, Board/volunteer/artist/community relations, and education programs with a growing company that attracts artists from the Metropolitan Opera, Washington National Opera, etc. Computer skills are essential to this position. An ideal candidate will have familiarity with Adobe CS6, Microsoft Office suite, social media, WordPress, and MailChimp.

Responsibilities: advertising and marketing, web development, graphic design, intern recruitment and management, copy editing, coordinate community auditions, Board relations, volunteer relations, publish e-newsletter, software/hardware management, data entry/management, bulk mailings, database management, music distribution, Young Artist/Apprentice Singer application oversight, press relations, donor relations, special event planning, manage social media, ticket giveaways, artist communications, artist contracts and services as needed, production admin support, basic office management

Education:  Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, or Arts Admin. Knowledge of classical music, opera, and/or theater a plus.

Experience:  At least two years’ experience working for a non-profit or working in an administrative support role. Graduate education may be substituted for work experience.

Charlottesville is a beautiful community (home of Presidents Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe as well as the University of VA), two hours south of D.C. and an hour from Richmond. Salary low-to-mid $30,000s; commensurate with experience. Start date April 1, 2017. You will be expected to work performances, events, and additional hours as the season and projects demand.
