The Assistant Director performs complex professional work assisting the Economic Development Director with the coordination of business development and retention efforts of the City, such as managing the business visitation program, serving as a liaison to address business problems and concerns, and interfacing with business associations on behalf of the City.
The preferred hiring range for this position is between $81,138.12 – $101,996.00 Annually. Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. - The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS, however the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS and there are certain provisions that must be met. The position will manage business retention efforts as well as marketing and communications efforts for the Office of Economic Development (OED) to promote and support investment within the City of Charlottesville. Additionally, the Assistant Director will develop and implement a comprehensive marketing strategy to promote the City to current and potential employers and anchor organizations through business visitation, innovative partnerships and other media. The Assistant Director will also assist with real estate and site development efforts as needed. Work is performed under the general direction of the Director of Economic Development.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher from an accredited college/university in economics, finance, marketing, communications, business/public administration, urban planning, or a related field AND at least 3 years of experience working in economic development, small business initiatives, and/or marketing and events;
- OR An Associate’s Degree or 60 or more college credits AND at least 5 years of experience working in economic development, small business initiatives, and/or marketing and events;
- OR an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
Special Requirements:
- Requires the possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia and maintain an acceptable driving record according to City of Charlottesville policies.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with online Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platforms, databases, and resources for economic and workforce development or other similar tools preferred.
- Economic development training courses completed through IEDC or OU-EDI; CEcD certification is preferred.
