The Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney I is responsible for the prosecution of routine criminal felony, misdemeanor, and traffic cases. Under the direct supervision of the Deputy and Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney II’s, the position determines the method of prosecution including potential case negotiations, plea agreements, and sentencing requests; prepares for court by researching legal issues, reviewing facts, studying scientific reports, and interviewing witnesses; prepares related papers including appellate briefs; maintains contact with the public, and with those involved in the case. The Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney I works under the general direction of the Commonwealth’s Attorney and Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney II’s.
The preferred hiring range for this position is between $78,194.65 – $93,635.38 Annually. Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS, however the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS and there are certain provisions that must be met. Minimum Qualifications:
Completion of the requirements for graduation with a JD in law from an accredited college or university. (Applicants who sat for the July 2024 Bar examination may be considered; however, no formal offer of employment will be made until notice of bar licensure has been received.)
Minimum three (3) years of experience as a criminal trial attorney or one (1) year as a prosecutor (judicial clerkships, any externships, or clinical placements with prosecutor’s offices may count towards the one year).
