Description

Culpeper Literacy Council, a non-profit organization providing adult literacy services through trained volunteers, is seeking an Adult Literacy Program Manager. The Program Manager assists in the delivery of adult education services and facilitates all components of ESOL and Adult Basic Education, including learner recruitment, language assessments, tutor-student matching and on-going tutor support. The Program Manager works as part of a team with other staff and volunteers to help carry out the mission of Culpeper Literacy Council. The position is a Monday-Friday, 25 hour per week position. Some evening and weekend work and occasional travel are required.

 

 

Skills Required

  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills (with all stakeholders, but especially
    with adult students), with the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships.
  • Enjoys working in a small office setting. A small staff environment requires a balance of
    independence and collaboration and at times requires stepping out of the job description
    to “pitch-in”.
  • Is comfortable working with minimal supervision and exercises sound judgment/problem
    solving when issues arise.
  • Flexibility for occasional travel and evening hours as needed.
  • Demonstrates initiative and creativity.
  • Solid computer skills
  • Experience with non-profit organizations (adult education and/or literacy program
    preferred, but not required).
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish preferred, but not required.

Additional Info

  •  Provide general information to prospective students and tutors, as requested.
  • Assist in the recruitment of adult learners and schedule potential new student registrations for assessment appointments.
  • Conduct learner intake, assessments, matching, follow-up and support.
  • Administer and assess adult basic education (ABE) and English as Second Language (ESOL) students and provide test diagnosis and program descriptions. (TABE and BEST Plus Testing) Re-test and post-test all students as needed for ongoing assessment using TABE and BEST Plus.
  • Maintain consistent contact with learners and tutors to monitor learner progress and accomplishments.
  • Collaborate with other staff (paid and unpaid) to support students and tutors and students by developing and implementing program evaluations.
  • Communicate regularly with tutors regarding class needs; time tracking, other items as needed. Maintains supply of books and instructional materials that are provided to each student enrolled in the program. Selecting and matching instructional material for all programs when needed.
  • Register new ESOL students in the Rosetta Stone system.
  • As Tutor Coordinator and tutor trainer, implement effective process for tutor screening, conduct new tutor training 2-4 times a year, pair students with tutors, and provide ongoing supervision and support of volunteers.
  • Conduct 2-4 tutor professional development workshops a year for existing tutors.
  • Participate in local and statewide trainings. Attend seminars, workshops and continuing education activities. Network with other Adult literacy providers and program managers.
