Sustainability Planning for Small Nonprofits
*Note: Application period is now closed. Organizations will be notified of selection by Friday February 8th.
Speaker: Sam Davis, Principal, The Davis Group
Building and sustaining the right organizational capacity can be particularly challenging. In order to be effective, small nonprofits must properly assess and balance a wide range of capabilities, knowledge and resources.
Join CNE and Sam Davis, an experienced strategy and governance consultant, as we address issues common to emerging nonprofits currently navigating capacity challenges. This full day training will offer pragmatic advice and a process for thinking strategically about organizational growth and sustainability. Topics to be addressed include:
- Nonprofit lifecycles and characteristics of each stage
- Characteristics of small and emerging nonprofits
- Key capacity components to which all small nonprofits should pay attention
- How to strategically grow your capacity in these key areas to build long term sustainability
- Board and ED roles in ensuring sustainability
In this training, teams will not only learn a framework they can utilize to build and sustain capacity in their organizations, they will also gain from examples offered by leaders of other similar organizations. Working in individual teams and small groups, participants will identify priorities and outline the first steps in a sustainability plan with which they can share with their boards and staff to begin implementation immediately.
This full-day training is restricted to Board-Executive Director leadership teams from nonprofits whose annual budgets do not exceed $500,000. The cost of $250 covers up to three individuals from each organization, the Executive Director, Board Chair and a program staffer (only if this person is involved in strategic planning/thinking). Once accepted for the training, participants will be sent a brief survey to assess the strengths and weaknesses of their organizations. Mr. Davis will use this information to tailor the training to the specific needs of the participants and to ensure that each leadership team is able to walk away with a strong draft of a sustainability plan for their organization.
*Note: participation is limited to Board-ED teams from CNE member organizations. Applications are required by Thursday January 31st, and the cost of training is $250. Organizations will be notified of selection by Friday February 8th.
