Additional Information

Loaves & Fishes’ mission is to provide nourishing food with respect and dignity to all who seek assistance, while offering robust opportunities for community engagement through volunteerism, partnerships, and nutrition education. Our vision is to ensure that our community’s marginalized population has access to adequate healthy food by providing culturally-appropriate foods, translators for non-English-speaking visitors, and nutrition education, including cooking skills. Founded in 2004 by Charlottesville’s 1st United Methodist Church, Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry became an independent nonprofit in 2011, and in 2015 opened a 5,900 sq. ft. food pantry at 2050 Lambs Road in Albemarle Co.

• Loaves & Fishes provides a week’s worth of free, healthy groceries to 10,000 food insecure Virginians each month. Need has increased 105% in the past year.
• 65% of the food we give out is fresh fruits and vegetables or proteins: milk, eggs, meat, and alternate proteins for vegetarians/vegans.
• We customize groceries for special diets, cultural preferences, and household size.
• We give out groceries on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, Thursday evenings, and Saturday mornings and people can pick up groceries two times each month.
• Loaves & Fishes gives groceries to anyone who comes to the pantry (so not just residents of Charlottesville and Albemarle). We have had visitors from all surrounding counties, including Cumberland, Bath, Rockingham/Harrisonburg, Culpeper, Waynesboro.
• Loaves & Fishes distributes USDA food that we access through our partnership with the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. Recipients of USDA food must have a household income at 250% or less of Federal Poverty level ($6500/month for a household of 4). Fewer than 1% of pantry visitors declare income higher than this.
• 51% of the food we distribute is USDA or donated from the food bank, 32% we rescue from grocery stores through partnerships established by Feeding America, we purchase 15% from the food bank and at wholesale from outside vendors, and 2% is donated by farmers and gardeners, transportation companies, and food drives.
• In 2023, Loaves & Fishes distributed 2.3 million pounds of food to 100,235 individuals.
