Description

The Literacy Council of Madison, Inc. is in search of a volunteer, impassioned by adult literacy, to serve as Treasurer for the Board of Directors, and willing and able to provide leadership in the financial life of the organization. Generally, the Treasurer is the officer of the Board of Directors responsible for controlling and accounting for the organization’s finances, and is in charge of disbursing and receiving funds.

Job Duties

  • Understands the organization’s mission and provides financial oversight in execution thereof; oversees the financial affairs of the organization and ensures they are legal, within accepted accounting principles, and consistent with organization bylaws and policies
  • Assists Executive Director in preparation of annual budget and monitors budget monthly
  • Reports regularly to the Board on organization’s financial status; translates and interprets financial information and financial concepts for the board
  • Prepares any required financial reports
  • Makes quarterly tax payments to the IRS and Virginia Department of Taxation, and oversees completion and submission of IRS form 990/990-EZ annually
  • Issues monthly payroll checks
  • Undertakes and oversees bookkeeping duties; signs checks; assures proper records are kept; carries out regular reconciliations
  • Maintains bank accounts
  • Collaborates with ad hoc committees responsible for fund raising events to ensure proper accounting and disposition of funds collected

Skills Required

  • Knowledge of bookkeeping and financial management principles, especially within the non profit sector
  • Strong financial analysis skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Working knowledge of Quick Books or other small business accounting software package
