Shift. works to eradicate abortion stigma through culture change, education, advocacy and pro-active policy. Position The Shift. Development Director will have strategic and operational responsibility for creating and overseeing the implementation of a strategic approach to fundraising which may include major gifts, individual/corporate donations, grant solicitation, and in-kind resources.

Responsibilities

Promote the organization

  • Foster an understanding of philanthropy within the organization;
  • Develop a comprehensive communication plan to promote the organization to its donors and maximize public awareness of the fundraising activities of the organization;
  • Coordinate the design, printing and distribution of marketing and communication materials for development efforts;
  • Build relationships with community/ industry stakeholders to advance the mission and fundraising goals of the organization.

Plan fund development activities

  • Collaborate with the Shift. CEO and Board of Directors to create a fund development plan which increases revenues to support the strategic direction of the organization;
  • Implement the fund development plans in accordance with ethical fundraising principles;
  • Monitor and evaluate all fundraising activities to ensure that the fundraising goals are being achieved;
  • Monitor trends in the community or region and adapt fundraising strategies as necessary.

Organize fund development activities

  • Develop and manage timelines for various fundraising activities to ensure strategic plans and critical fund raising processes are carried out in a timely manner;
  • Develop policies and procedures for the development department which reflect ethical fundraising practices;
  • Prepare and submit grant applications as outlined in the fund development plan to generate funds for the organization;
  • Oversee the planning and execution of special fundraising events as specified in the fund development plan to generate funds for the organization;
  • Identify and develop foundation, corporate, community and individual prospects for the organization’s fundraising priorities;
  • Oversee the administration of a donor mailing list and database which respects the privacy and confidentiality of donor information;
  • Coordinate in-kind donations and make decisions regarding the issuing of receipts.

Staff fund development activities

  • In consultation with the Shift. CEO and Board, engage volunteers for special fund development projects using established volunteer management practices.

Manage fund development budget

  • Develop and gain approval for an annual income and expenditure budget for the fund development program(s);
  • Prepare regular reports on progress, budgets, receipts and expenditure related to fundraising and the management of the fund development activities;
  • Monitor expenses and analyze budget reports on fund development and recommend changes as necessary;
  • Expect individual to contribute to our financial growth and to ensure that all fundraising – events and initiatives – are in alignment with Shift’s. mission and goals;
  • Develop and execute fundraising plan to increase contributions from all sources, including foundations, individuals, and corporate gifts;
  • Maintain donor records, increase donor database and activities to a diverse type of communities and acknowledge donations. Individual must exhibit a forthcoming and trustworthy relationship with both Shift. and WWH staff;
  • Collaborate with the Shift. CEO and management team to execute a strategy to meet funding needs of their projects and departments;
  • Collaborate with Shift. CEO and Finance Committee to develop and implement fundraising goals, campaign tracking and solicitation strategies;
  •  Responsible for public speaking, public relations, event planning and execution as assigned;
  • In coordination with the Marketing Director, Oversee production of all print and virtual relations and marketing materials, including newsletters, updates and annual reports.

  •  Make Decisions: Assess situations to determine the importance, urgency and risks, and make clear decisions which are timely and in the best interests of the organization;
  • Organize: Set priorities, develop a work schedule, monitor progress towards goals, and track details, data, information and activities;
  • Plan: Determine strategies to move the organization forward, set goals, create and implement actions plans, and evaluate the process and results;
  • Solve Problems: Assess problem situations to identify causes, gather and process relevant information, generate possible solutions, and make recommendations and/or resolve the problem.

All candidates should have proven leadership and relationship management experience, as well as, demonstrable experience and quantifiable successes/qualifications that include:

  • Bachelor’s degree;
  • 5 years’ experience in fundraising, event planning, grant writing and non-profit management;
  • A certificate in Fundraising Management is an asset;
  • Knowledge of federal and provincial legislation affecting charities;
  • Knowledge of special events planning and management;
  • Knowledge of the management of volunteer resources;
  • Familiar with standard concepts, practices and procedures within the development field;
  • Proven track record of successful fundraising;
  •  Proficiency in the use of:
    •  Fund raising software
    •  MS Office Suite
