Position Overview: The Executive Director is a full-time position that reports to the Board of Directors and oversees one full-time, several part-time employees, several interns, and multiple volunteers. We seek an experienced, principled leader with a proven ability to work with others to accomplish goals. The ideal candidate will provide vision and leadership to promote the Society’s historical and genealogical research, public programs, and critical partnerships and fundraise to support these efforts. This person will ideally be well-versed in today’s public history applications and bring a strong commitment to community service.
Job Duties
• Determine annual goals and identify key issues in collaboration with the Board of Directors
• Assist the Board of Directors in identifying and cultivating strong candidates for board service
• With the board, develop a strategic action plan
• Fundraise at all levels and build strong relationships with significant donors
• Manage and provide guidance to the staff; attract and retain first-rate talent
• Engage with the community and provide positive public relations
• Create and direct the implementation of visionary programming to convey the significance of local history
• Provide sound financial management and administrative oversight
• Oversee property maintenance
• With the ACHS Librarian, work collaboratively and closely with the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library
• Cultivate relationships with partner organizations
• Other related duties as required

Desired Professional Characteristics:
• Bachelor’s degree or higher
• Five years of experience in public history
• Familiarity with the fundraising environment in Virginia and beyond
• Successful track record in obtaining grant funding

• Decision-making ability
• Effective communication skills
• Demonstrated passion for history and for sharing its stories
Work Schedule
This is a professional position, and schedule is determined by the needs of programs and activities. Some evening time will be required at special events and programs.

Established in 1940, the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society (ACHS) provides exhibitions and research services from its McIntire Library building located on Second Street. The ACHS boasts an excellent research library, a small museum dedicated to history and culture, a magazine, a free lecture series, and walking tours. The organization aims to be a vibrant community center focused on research, learning, and sharing.
