In conjunction with our 20th anniversary year in 2025, Charlottesville Tomorrow is expanding its team and seeking a contracted event coordinator who is passionate about creating meaningful experiences that strengthen our connections with local communities.

The event coordinator will report to the chief of revenue and will work closely with the editorial team, as well as other stakeholders, to support the mission and growth of Charlottesville Tomorrow through impactful event experiences.

The event coordinator will play a crucial role in organizing and executing a variety of events, both internally and in collaboration with community partners. This is a unique opportunity for a highly organized, creative, and adaptable professional who thrives in a dynamic environment.

This is a year-long contract with hourly pay, at 30 to 40 hours per month. The salary is negotiable and the role has potential for growth within the organization.

We work hard to create a healthy and inclusive work environment that is rethinking how local news is produced, for the sake of journalists and business staff doing the work and the communities we serve.

The event coordinator will have the opportunity to contribute to the overall development of a growing news organization while fostering meaningful connections with the community through impactful events. This role involves regular communication with community members and partners, ensuring their needs and expectations are met. You will also handle event-related inquiries, address issues as they arise, and represent Charlottesville Tomorrow at public events. The ideal candidate will prioritize building meaningful connections and facilitating impactful events that support our mission and reflect the interests of the communities we serve.

Charlottesville Tomorrow is a community-driven, socially conscious news organization. We serve our neighbors by connecting them to each other and to the issues that affect them most.

This is a newsroom at the forefront of local news. It’s a place for talented journalists and big thinkers to dig into mission-driven work that impacts people’s lives regularly.

Our reporters and editors dig deeply into issues that affect our community, regularly producing work that highlights issues often ignored by other media. Our newsroom covers the issues that are most important in our community with a focus on race and equity and reaches a large share of our market through our free email subscriptions, news apps, social media and events.

Location
Charlottesville is a college town with many opportunities for learning and recreation, and good quality of life. It is a competitive and fast-changing small media market with high visibility in state and national news cycles. Charlottesville is also a fast-growing, multicultural node in the region’s knowledge and finance economy. The quality of living is high, and it is a short drive from Washington D.C. and Richmond.
This is not a remote position. Our team lives and works in the communities we cover in central Virginia and regularly spends time in our Charlottesville newsroom.

Job Duties

Here’s some of what the event coordinator will do:

– Plan, coordinate and execute events, including managing logistics, timelines and budgets.
– Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to ensure successful events.
– Develop and maintain relationships with vendors, suppliers and other stakeholders.
– Identify opportunities for event improvement and innovation.
– Represent Charlottesville Tomorrow at events and maintain a professional presence.
– Assist with other tasks as needed, such as creating marketing materials and managing digital spaces related to events.

While we don’t expect any single candidate to possess all of these skills or experiences, the ideal candidate will have some of the following qualifications:

– Project management experience, particularly in event planning or production.
– Proven ability to multitask, manage deadlines and think strategically.
– Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with diverse teams and stakeholders.
– Demonstrated creativity and innovation in event planning.
– Strong attention to detail, organizational skills and problem-solving abilities.
– Experience with event software, tools or platforms.
– Flexibility and adaptability to manage changing priorities or unexpected challenges.
– Relevant educational background or certifications in event management, hospitality or related fields are a plus.

Work Schedule

Flexible hours: We pride ourselves on building a newsroom that allows you to do work in the ways and hours that are best for you and the community. You have the option of working where you like or in the newsroom most of the time. This is not, however, a remote position and because it is focused on in-person events, requires commuting and in-person meetings. Our team also conducts regular meetings in person and by video, and we use Slack and phone to communicate throughout the day.
