CIC hosts the Central Virginia Small Business Development Center (CV SBDC). The Center operates under a Cooperative Agreement between CIC and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) administered through George Mason University. Efforts on behalf of the Center are performed in accordance with the goals and objectives of the Virginia Small Business Development Center network. The Center includes offices in Charlottesville and Culpeper and serves the City of Charlottesville and the Counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Nelson, Greene, Orange, Louisa, Madison, Culpeper, and Rappahannock.
CV SBDC has been the top performing SBDC in Virginia for four years, having served 915 clients with over 3151 hours of business advising in 2023, assisting 24 in starting new businesses, and helping businesses secure nearly $51.37 million in capital for their business. In addition to the Director, the CV SBDC team at CIC includes 4 full-time staff, 3 part-time staff, and 10 contract advisers.
The Director of the Central Virginia Small Business Development Center (CV SBDC) is responsible for providing direction, leadership, and technical support to the staff and clients of the CV SBDC. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic leader with strong adaptive leadership skills, adept at fostering collaborative opportunities both within the organization and with external partners. They should excel in guiding, motivating, teaching, and instructing team members while also demonstrating a commitment to continuous learning and a genuine curiosity about business resources and economic development.
The successful candidate will be able to build and operate within consistent systems across teams, maximizing the strengths of a diverse workforce. They will serve as a key partner in regional economic development, leveraging their business acumen and awareness of resources to support entrepreneurs and small businesses effectively. As part of the CIC Executive Leadership Team, the Director will be directly responsible to and evaluated by the President of CIC, embodying CIC’s Brand Attributes in all interactions and driving the organization’s mission forward.
This position requires some evenings and occasional weekend work.
Job Duties
Within the limits of the CIC’s programs, policies, procedures, and budget, the Director of CV SBDC is responsible for and has authority to perform the duties listed below:
– Counseling, Training & Outreach
– Provides one-on-one counseling and consulting to small business owners.
– Analyzes and evaluates service needs for clients; Provides in-depth technical assistance in business planning, management, financial analysis, marketing, and related areas of business operations.
– Designs and delivers small business group training programs.
– Develops and maintains partnerships with localities and business groups throughout the service region.
– Administration of SBDC Program
– Directs, manages, and supervises the operations of the CV SBDC program and supervises, trains, and evaluates CV SBDC consultants and staff.
– Develops, implements, and evaluates marketing plan for the CV SBDC program, including strategies for program promotion.
– Develops and fosters funding sources for the CV SBDC to provide resources to “match” SBA funding, plus secure event/program sponsors, as needed
– Ensures compliance with federal guidelines related to the SBDC program and with Virginia SBDC policies and procedures.
– Measures and evaluates the impact of SBDC programs and activities
– Manages center budget expenditures, provides financial oversight for the center, and maintains records for Center operation. (CIC maintains financial records in accordance with contractual requirements.)
– Prepares reports for funders, writes proposals for funding program plans, and prepares other official documents for the operation and continuation of the program.
– Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with diverse business communities, including minority-, women- and veteran-owned businesses.
– Performs other duties as required or assigned.
– Organizational Leadership
– Serves as a member of CIC’s leadership team that sets overall direction and strategy for the organization
– Coordinates the CV SBDC Advisory Council.
– Participates in Virginia SBDC Network meetings and on strategic working groups.
Skills Required
– Bachelor’s degree required
– 5-10 years experience in business management and consulting or small business ownership
– Demonstrated ability to advise business owners in critical business management areas, including access to capital, financial management, marketing, business and strategic planning, and business operations.
– Experience supervising professional and administrative staff
– Excellent organizational and administrative skills including ability to prioritize multiple tasks and willingness to “roll up your sleeves” to get the job done
– Action-oriented professional who thrives in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment and is able to work with diverse industries and clientele
– Outstanding oral and written communications skills; effective communicator in a variety of presentation settings, including one-on-one and small and large groups
– Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel, Powerpoint, Google Suite;
– Work ethic, integrity, and creativity
Work Schedule
M-F, 9AM-5PM
This position requires some evenings and occasional weekend work.
Additional Info
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
– Master’s degree preferred in business or related field
– Experience raising funds to support operations of a nonprofit or community organization
– Experience managing grants, contracts and organizational budgets
– Comfort and ability to quickly become proficient/use CenterIC (SBDC CRM), Quickbooks Online and Salesforce.
