Description

Reporting to and working in partnership with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director provides leadership, vision and direction for The Highland Center and develops the strategic plan for The Highland Center. The Executive Director provides executive level support to the Board and is the primary representative for the organization in the community.

Job Duties

Board Support and Strategic Planning
• Assists in identifying, recruiting, and educating Board members
• Provides support to the Board of Directors, officers, and committees
• Ensures materials related to fundraising, grant management, and special projects are provided to the Board
• Is responsible for the achievement of special projects and strategic objectives. To that end, provides guidance, direction, and authorization to carry out major project-related plans, standards and procedures, consistent with the mission of the organization and the established policies of the Board
• Ensures organization compliance with all local, state and federal legal requirements

Financial Management
• Leads the staff and Board in developing a realistic annual budget and makes financial decisions consistent with the budget as approved by the Board
• Provides regular, timely internal financial statements to the Board that compare performance to budget and to the previous year (or other benchmarks)
• Monitors revenue and spending to ensure accountability of funds; plans for adequate cash flow to cover operational needs
• Conducts multi-year financial analysis, analyzing trends and engaging the Board in strategic discussions about financial stability and sustainability, including the development of adequate operating reserves
• Works with staff to plan and execute annual fundraising campaign

Operations and Programs
• Responsible for overseeing the upkeep, maintenance, and safety of The Highland Center’s facility
• Manages The Highland Center building and daily operations: greets visitors, responds to the needs of tenants, and is on-site for rentals and special events
• Plans and executes a variety of special and/or fundraising events for the community
• Hires staff and develops staffing plan to meet the evolving needs of the organization
• Supervises staff and volunteers who deliver the organization’s programs and services
• Ensures that the Center has the capacity to carry out its programs and manage its operations within available financial resources
• Ensures that programs are conducted at a high level of quality and professionalism and are consistent with commitments made to funders and supporters

Community Development and Public Relations
• Represents the Center and the community in key associations and organizations by participating in regional, state, and national collaborative efforts, and speaking in public settings
• Provides oversight in fundraising efforts, including supporting the Board’s involvement in fundraising, personally cultivating and soliciting donors and supervising development staff and implementation of fundraising plans and policies approved by the board
• Cultivates positive relationships for the Center and the community with the media, nonprofit organizations, businesses, foundations, and community organizations
• Provides relevant information to print publications and digital media communications, including newsletters, brochures, website, social media, news releases and other media

Skills Required

-Excellent communication skills, both oral and written

-Understanding of the practices and principles of financial management
-Knowledge of nonprofit organizations and their operations
-Exceptional organizational and time management skills
-Computer skills including database management, spreadsheet, and word processing skills, and knowledge of Microsoft products including Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint
-Ability to make presentations to a wide range of individuals and groups
-Strong leadership ability, sound judgment and high professional ethics
-Knowledge of various media opportunities to incorporate in an extensive public relations program promoting the organization

Work Schedule

While the Executive Director is a full time position, the Board of The Highland Center recognizes that Monterey, Virginia is a rural community which may necessitate flexibility in schedule. Additionally, The Highland Center does and seeks to have events in the building not just during the work week, but on the weekends as well. The Board invites all interested candidates to apply and seeks an Executive Director who is willing to be both flexible in schedule and a leader who is able to coordinate with staff to maintain an active community center.
