General Description:
Big Brothers Big Sisters is seeking a Development Director to create and lead the fundraising strategy and activities for the agency and to help fulfill our mission to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. The Development Director works closely with the Executive Director, Director of Programs, other Development staff and Board to create, implement and grow all fundraising efforts related to the annual fund and grant making to meet the organization’s goals. As a member of the executive team, the Development Director is also responsible for helping shape agency strategy.

Job Duties

What you get to do:
• Build and lead a comprehensive fund development program and strategy to meet the organization’s financial needs and facilitate growth, including the identification, cultivation, solicitation, acknowledgment, stewardship, reporting and recognition of a range of funding sources.
• Develop positive and purposeful prospective donor relationships with local foundations and individuals across Central and Eastern Virginia (with emphasis in Greater Richmond).
• Build a grant strategy, including writing and tracking grants.
• Manage donor database, tracking and analyzing donor performance and explore new strategies to maximize revenue.
• Oversee and implement the annual fund, create and grow the major giving program and planned giving.
● Create and manage all branded communications (both print and web-based/social) to advance key strategies, promote visibility and ensure messaging consistency to key stakeholders.
● Engage a top-tier, fundraising Board of Directors, as well as support other volunteer leadership committees, including the Marketing & Development Committee.
● Participate in agency goal setting, budgeting, and planning.
● Attend and participate in Board meetings.
● Keep informed of, share, and implement current philanthropic giving trends and techniques.
● Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Skills Required

What you bring:
● A Bachelor’s degree is preferred, with a concentration in nonprofit management, marketing or related field a plus.
● At least 5 years of fundraising and resource development experience and proven experience achieving a substantial fundraising goal (over 800K preferred).
● Exceptional fundraising skills, including stewarding donors, executing fundraising strategies, monitoring funding sources, and preparing grant requests.
● Superior interpersonal, strategic thinking, written, and oral communication skills.
● Ability to develop strong relationships quickly with diverse stakeholders.
● Proven ability to craft compelling messaging and materials that invest constituents in the mission of BBBS.
● Dedication to relationship building, effective communication and a commitment to working as an integral part of the team.
● Ability to prioritize multiple projects and meet strict deadlines while exercising initiative, autonomy and attention to detail.
● A passion for the organization’s mission of igniting the potential of youth and for sharing this mission with donors and funders.
● Flexibility to travel within the service region (Richmond, Tri-Cities, Williamsburg, Newport News, Norfolk, Virginia Beach), up to 30%

Work Schedule

Monday-Friday, 9-5 with occasional evenings/weekends to meet needs of organization.

Remote position based out of Richmond office with regular in person meetings. Full time position with benefits:
• Hiring range: $70,000-$100,000
• 37.5 hours per week
• 2 weeks’ vacation
