At Girls in Gear, we teach life skills through bike skills for girls ages 5+. We find bikes to be an extraordinary tool for change in ourselves and our communities as a conduit for lessons on kindness, compassion, and inner strength. Our no-questions-asked scholarship policy provides financial support, bikes, and helmets to ensure everyone has access to our program. Our vision is for a world where every girl grows into her most brilliant, tenacious, and confident self, on and off her bike. Our Eastern Virginia Program Director must be fully committed to our mission and growing our program.

This position is salaried and home-based ($25/hour). The Greater Richmond Program Director reports directly to the Executive Director and is responsible for the management of all Girls in Gear programming and growth in the area.

Job Duties

Program and Site Management

• Develop new relationships working to sustainably expand our presence amongst sponsors, community partners, and participant families.

• Identify and lay the groundwork for new program sites in the program region. The employee will be responsible for communication, and interfacing with program sites, stakeholders, and the volunteers and coaches.

• Act as the overall coordinator for program sites throughout the region both new, and existing.

• Manage on-person visits to program sites to ensure that the Girls in Gear curriculum and program are being presented in a way that is consistent with our mission and standards.

• Uphold Girls in Gear’s policies and procedures.

• Generate new ideas for best practices to better serve our riders, volunteers, and stakeholders.

• Maintain and collect registration data from local program sites (as needed).

• Attend staff meetings, community events, and training.

Be the face of Girls in Gear to generate community-wide publicity.

Volunteer Management

• Recruit and retain volunteers of any gender identities and riding abilities to serve as volunteer coaches.

• Manage volunteer, program, and recruitment databases, registration forms, and applications.

• Ensure all program sites are facilitated by qualified volunteer coaches.

• Enforce all current coaching policies and procedures and generate continuous improvement.

• Communicate regularly with coaches regarding trainings and meetings.

• Organize and facilitate coaches’ meetings, as needed.

• Oversee Eastern Virginia regional board

Curriculum/Equipment Management

• Help manage, organize, and distribute the bike fleet and helmets for riders in need.

• Prepare coach materials for all sites.

• Manage inventory, distribution, and storage of program curriculum, shirts, materials, and supplies.

• Collect curriculum and materials at the end of the season.

• Outstanding communication skills in multiple environments and with a range of audiences (internal and external)

• Meticulous organization

• Experience supervising a team

• Demonstrated experience with project management

• Ability to multitask, prioritize and make efficient decisions

• Flexible and adaptable

Preferred Qualifications

• Coaching experience with Girls in Gear or similar programs

• Connections to the local community

• Bilingual (Spanish) is an advantage

Work Schedule

We ask for a 5-day work week with flexible scheduling. Because our program runs seasonally (Spring and Fall), hours will be concentrated in the lead up to and during the seasons. In season, 10-20 hour weeks are to be expected. Our seasons run from April – to June, and September-November, and the busiest times include the months prior to the season start (February – March, and July – August).

Note that site visits are on weekday afternoons and weekend mornings so an ideal candidate has a flexible schedule and reliable transportation. The job requires extensive travel throughout the Greater Richmond area (considered Henrico, Chesterfield, and Hanover Counties). The ideal candidate has relationships with community organizations within this area.
