Contribute to the delivery of the Department of Public Works mission in providing professional public works services to manage natural and built systems, and foster community health, safety, and sustainability. The preferred hiring amount is between $92,108.00 – $115,134.39 Annually. Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. This position performs technical and administrative work overseeing the operation of the City Government and School facilities and building assets. The Facilities Maintenance Manager directs and coordinates the routine repair, preventive maintenance, and custodial services to buildings either owned or leased by the City, including schools. This work includes responsibility for all heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), electrical, and solar photovoltaic systems; as well as for supporting implementation of the City’s Climate Action Plan with a focus on building energy performance. Responsible for the supervision of building trades, mechanical services, and custodial employees.  Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Public Works Director.

Education and Experience: 

  • High school graduation or equivalent and at least 7 years of relevant work experience in facilities management, including related sustainability practices (a minimum of 7 years public or a minimum combination of 4 years public and 3 years private) within the last 9 years OR 
  • Trade school certificate or associate’s degree and 5 years of relevant work experience in facilities management, including related sustainability practices within the last 7 years OR 
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher and 3 years of relevant work experience in facilities management, including related sustainability practices within the last 5 years.

Special Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid appropriate driver’s permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia is required. (To view our driving eligibility requirements, visit https://www.charlottesville.gov/faq.aspx?qid=166);
  • Building Operator Certification (BOC) issued by the Northwest Energy Council or ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preference for continuing education and certification as a Certified Facility Manager (CFM), Facility Management Professional (FMP) or similar.
