Description

The Leadership Giving Manager implements the strategic priority of financial sustainability at The Montpelier Foundation by creating and executing a dynamic, innovative, national philanthropy plan for raising major gifts ($25,000+/donor) to support programs and other needs, in conjunction with the President and CEO and The Montpelier Foundation Board of Directors. The Leadership Giving Manager will be knowledgeable about Montpelier, James and Dolley Madison, the U.S. Constitution and American history, the institution of slavery and the Enslaved Community at Montpelier, the importance of civics education, and the importance of structural parity in Montpelier’s governance. In addition, the LGM will maintain up-to-date knowledge and understanding of activities and strategic and programmatic priorities at Montpelier.

Job Duties

A. Develop and implement long-term and short-term plans and goals for increasing major gift support through stewarding current donors as well as significantly expanding the major gift donor base to areas of philanthropy where Montpelier has not previously been active.
B. Manage cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of a growing portfolio of at least 150 prospective donors with the capacity to give at least $25,000.
C. Make direct, face-to-face solicitations, and assist the board and other staff with their solicitation (e.g. provide portfolio development support, strategic counsel, and help with donor communications).
D. Research and identify prospective donors and track current philanthropy trends.
E. Establish and execute strategies that advance the moves-management process.
F. Develop and implement a strategy for each prospect/donor in the portfolio to increase overall giving levels, secure annual gifts and multi-year campaign pledges, and future gifts that advances the Foundation’s mission.
G. Record 15 or more significant contacts each month.
H. Cultivate and nurture relationships to turn qualified annual fund donors and Madison Cabinet members into major donors.
I. Develop special events for major gift prospects and donors at Montpelier and around the U.S.
J. Complete call reports after visits/calls with major gift prospects and develop strategies for closing gifts.
K. Manage systems and software to track and cultivate donors and prospects, including our donor database and wealth screening tools.
L. Prepare proposals, written materials, and letters to prospective donors.
M. Review and report to the President and Montpelier’s board current and previous years’ results, recommend changes and enhancements, and major and planned gift activities.
N. Support the formation of unrestricted and flexibly restricted cases for support by providing feedback and insight garnered from interacting with assigned prospects.
O. Collaborate with other development staff to develop fundraising collateral and case statements (brochures, letters, articles, acknowledgments, webpage management, etc.).
P. Promote and solicit planned gifts.
Q. Other duties as assigned.

Skills Required

A. Proven track record of at least five years of successful fundraising experience for major and planned gifts. Previous experience in a museum or cultural organization is preferred.
B. Strong knowledge of development concepts and fundraising techniques, especially those related to major gift development and planned giving.
C. Comfort around wealth and ability to develop meaningful relationships, through face-to-face meetings, phone calls, and regular correspondence, leading to the securing of major gifts.
D. Ability to understand, appreciate, and articulate Montpelier’s mission and strategy, and the important role of development in executing both.
E. Demonstrates excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
F. Strong organizational and administrative skills demonstrated by the ability to handle simultaneous tasks; detail oriented with a high level of accuracy; and maintain a high level of performance under pressure.
G. Flexibility with work hours, with the ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for donor events. Also, must have the ability to travel for donor meetings and events.
H. Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness, with the ability to interact and work as part of a team with diverse groups and individuals.
I. Ability to effectively utilize Microsoft Office and Blackbaud fundraising software.
J. Requires sitting and standing associated with a general, fast-paced office environment. Ability to lift and transport materials weighing up to 25 pounds.

Work Schedule

Flexibility with work hours, with the ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for donor events. Also, must have the ability to travel for donor meetings and events.
