Description
Garth Newel Music Center in Hot Springs, Virginia seeks a dynamic, experienced, and organized leader for the role of Director of Operations.
About the Organization
Founded in 1973 and currently celebrating its 50th anniversary, Garth Newel Music Center is a year-round chamber music venue situated in the heart of Virginia’s Allegheny Mountains, presenting over 50 concerts throughout the year performed by the Garth Newel Piano Quartet and other renowned guest musicians. Concerts are paired with gourmet meals created by a resident chef and culinary team and lodging is available in the historic Manor House on the exquisite 114-acre property.
Garth Newel also hosts the Emerging Artist Fellowship Program each summer (an intensive 4-week workshop for college-age students), an Amateur Chamber Music Retreat each spring,
and is home to the Allegheny Mountain String Project, a vital source of music education for children in the Bath, Alleghany, and Highland communities. Known for its breathtaking scenery, world-class performances and culinary experiences, and friendly and comfortable accommodations, Garth Newel is truly a one-of-a-kind institution.
The Director of Operations is the lead administrator for Garth Newel Music Center, responsible for all event and hospitality operations, facilities and financial management, marketing, and human resources functions. In addition, the Director of Operations promotes and facilitates campus rentals for corporate retreats, weddings, and other uses, a significant and growing revenue stream for the organization.
The Director of Operations supervises up to four full-time
employees and numerous part-time and seasonal workers, and acts as the primary operational liaison to external vendors who provide
support services in ticketing, information technology, marketing, graphic design, and financial management.
The Director supports all fundraising, programmatic, and promotional activities undertaken by the Executive Director, Artistic Directors, and the GNMC Foundation Board of Directors.
Organizational Structure
The Director of Operations reports to the Executive Director of Garth Newel Music Center, and currently supervises the Administrative Coordinator, Facilities Manager, and Marketing and
Development Coordinator. The Director of Operations indirectly supervises other part-time and seasonal workers including housekeepers, groundskeeping and maintenance staff, servers and
kitchen staff, and others.
Job Duties
Duties and Responsibilities
Management
Recruit, hire, train, evaluate, and manage full-time professional, part-time, and seasonal employees.
Create and maintain employment policy documents and ensure compliance.
Maintain employment records and manage benefits for all employees.
Lead the rental program, marketing Garth Newel as a destination for corporate retreats, weddings, private events, and other use, facilitating the planning and execution of all rentals and meeting annual revenue targets.
Supervise and facilitate volunteer programs.
Operations
Supervise all event and hospitality operations, including hotel booking and hospitality, ticketing, and front-of-house for performances and other events, ensuring that all patrons and guests at Garth Newel receive extraordinary service.
Supervise the creation and execution of an annual marketing strategy for Garth Newel performances, events, and other enterprises, defining and meeting annual sales and revenue targets.
Supervise the creation, review, and maintenance of all public-facing communications for the organization, including the website, fundraising solicitations, print publications, print and media ads, social media, videos, and other marketing and promotional materials.
Supervise the maintenance, repair, and renovation of all facilities, grounds, and equipment.
Collaborate with the Executive Director, Facilities Manager, and Building and Grounds Committee to ensure facilities are stewarded to the highest level of quality.
Assist in the creation, periodic review, and execution of the Facilities Strategic Plan.
Administration
Create and maintain management documents, policies, and records, including employee handbook, tax and financial records, archival marketing collateral, and other materials.
Serve as primary financial administrator for the organization, supervising payroll, accounts payable, ticket, rental, and hospitality revenue, and donations.
Perform deposits and account reconciliations.
Assist in the creation and management of the annual budget.
Collaborate with the Executive Director, Treasurer, external accounting vendors, and auditors to ensure timely and accurate financial operations and reporting.
Negotiate and manage agreements and serve as primary liaison with all external vendors, including accounting and payroll administrators, external auditors, ticketing and reservation software and information technology providers, web and graphic designers, marketing consultants, and others.
Administer and execute agreements with guest artists and other artistic contractors, ensuring accuracy and timely payment.
Perform other duties as assigned and deemed necessary to the success of the mission of Garth Newel Music Center.

Working Conditions
The position is not remote and requires evening, weekend, and holiday work on-site. Position requires the ability to move long distances, and lift up to forty pounds.
Additional Info
Qualifications and Experience
College or professional degree required. Minimum 5 years experience in an arts-focused non-profit or a management role in the event, live performance, or hospitality industry, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience leading and managing full- and part-time staff preferred
