Description

The Housing Programs Director will supervise and administer The Haven’s housing programs, as well as supervise and support Housing Department staff. The Director will lead collaboration with property managers and other partner organizations to work towards our vision of ending homelessness in the greater Charlottesville community. This position requires an enthusiastic commitment to the principles of the Housing First model and the values of the harm reduction approach.

Job Duties

  • Consistently embody the guiding values of The Haven when interacting with human beings:

    • Practice and promote antiracist, trauma-informed, person-centered, and strengths-based responses to human beings
    • Foster a culture of collaboration, mutual support, creativity, and excellence within the Housing Department
  • Supervise Housing Department staff:
    • Provide leadership, support, and accountability for members of the Housing Department
    • Engage in weekly individual supervision meetings with Housing Department staff to provide support, critical feedback, troubleshooting, creative problem-solving, assistance with program administration, and guidance for professional development
    • Lead performance reviews for Housing Department staff
    • In the spirit of The Haven’s confidentiality policy, maintain impeccable confidentiality on matters including sensitive guest issues, staff performance issues, and donor information
  • Housing department administration and operations:
    • Oversee Housing Department staff onboarding and ongoing training, including Critical Time Intervention, Trauma-Informed Care, and Motivational Interviewing
    • Facilitate weekly Housing Team meetings and record meeting minutes
    • Develop and implement review processes for Housing programs, using guidelines provided by local, state, and national monitoring agencies, as well as internal goals set by Haven staff and board 
    • Continually evaluate, update, and communicate to community partners eligibility requirements, prioritization criteria, and referral processes for Haven Housing programs
    • Supervise administration of all Haven housing programs Haven Housing Fund and evaluate their efficacy on an ongoing basis
    • Monitor all budget expenses and participate in budget planning
    • Revise the Housing Programs Manual as needed
  • Landlord management:
    • Develop master list of landlords
    • Landlord acquisition activities 
    • Resolution of landlord/Housing Program tenant conflicts that cannot be solved by Housing Specialists 
  • Community engagement:
    • Develop and distribute list of housing resources
    • Attend regular system-wide meetings, including Coordinated Entry System, Community Case Review, and Service Provider Council meetings
    • Receive notifications from service providers when opportunities arise, i.e., HUD-VASH, SSVF, Rapid Re-Housing, Homeless Prevention, Permanent Supportive Housing, Secure Seniors Fund, and Haven Housing Fund
    • Develop relationships with current and former Clients and incorporate their feedback in the program review and improvement process
    • Maintain and develop strong partnerships with community agencies in the homelessness and housing system of care
    • Assist with The Haven’s community education efforts and maintain program literature and materials
  • Interdepartmental collaboration:
    • Engage in weekly supervision meetings with the Executive Director
    • Attend weekly all-staff meetings
    • Attend weekly management meetings
    • Contribute to the development and refinement of procedures and protocols necessary to operating The Haven
  • Professional development:
    • Attend training and conferences as assigned
    • Pursue professional development opportunities relevant to The Haven’s mission

Skills Required

Preferred Skills:

  • Demonstrated experience managing programs and teams
  • Emotional intelligence, cultural awareness, and a sense of humor
  • Inclusive, self-directed, adaptable, flexible, and creative
  • Awareness of the issues people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity face
  • Non-profit experience, preferably working with marginalized populations
  • Strong collaborator and meeting facilitator
  • Familiarity with affordable housing issues and Housing First approach to homelessness
  • Excellent oral/written communication skills
  • Comfortable with computers and able to learn new software programs
  • Lived experience of homelessness
  • Understanding of personal/professional boundaries and self-care practices and ability to consistently implement them
  • Regular access to reliable transportation
  • Experience with: Motivational Interviewing and Critical Time Intervention methods; trauma-informed care and harm reduction methods; Progressive Engagement person-centered approach

Schedule: 40 hours, Monday – Friday
