Description

Purpose 

The Educational Technology Assistant is responsible for providing seasonal classroom technology support for students and faculty who are visiting UVA for RBS’s intensive summer classes in Charlottesville. This includes: setting up and maintaining classroom technology, including (but not limited to) projectors, wireless microphones, speaker systems, document cameras, digital cameras, computers, tablets, mobile devices, and live-streaming equipment. During Rare Book School’s intensive summer courses, this person will serve as a vital member of not only the technology team, but also the broader RBS staff, providing secondary support for overall program needs while on-call for audio visual duties. This position reports to the Director of Technology.

Pay and Benefits

  • $15/hr to $20/hr based on experience (with time-and-a-half paid for any hours worked over 40 hours, should an urgent situation arise)
  • Breakfast, lunch, coffee/tea, snacks, and some dinners are provided
  • RBS provides shared housing in apartment-style dormitories for summer staffers who are not based in Charlottesville
  • Staff who work four full weeks are eligible for a tuition credit for one RBS course

Job Duties

Primary Responsibilities

  • Set up and prepare all equipment for use prior to the start of each class session; power down equipment at the close of each session
  • Modify and refresh room equipment as necessary between course weeks
  • Check in with each faculty member, and with the students in their class, to ensure that all have the resources they need for the class session, including UVA guest wireless access
  • Remain on-call while classes are in session; ensure equipment operability and troubleshoot using any solutions necessary
  • Track movement of equipment to individuals and venues; update inventories as needed
  • Maintain a calm, professional, helpful, and reassuring demeanor in the classroom when adjustments are necessary
  • While on-call, work closely with the Director of Technology on Salesforce data cleaning, inventory management, and related IT/AV tasks

Other Duties As Needed (Secondary Responsibilities)

  • Assist programs staff with RBS faculty teaching needs (e.g., making and assembling photocopies, arranging classroom materials, liaising with RBS staff members, etc.) 
  • Assist collections staff with the transport of collections materials from RBS offices to classrooms in the Rotunda and on the UVA Lawn 
  • Help session staff prepare spaces for RBS events (e.g. lectures, coffee breaks, lunches, and dinners) 

Work Environment

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Must be able to remain in a seated stationary position to operate computers and other office equipment, to climb ladders or stepstools to reach ceiling-mounted equipment, or to bend/crawl to place below-table or floor-level wiring or equipment.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 30 lbs. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Please note that parts of the RBS workspace function as a standard special collections library environment with possible exposure to mold and dust. 
  • All RBS employees are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 unless an approved exemption is received. Those with exemptions must consent to weekly testing. 

Skills Required

  • Ability to work in team settings and communicate clearly
    Willingness to take direction well, and to take initiative when needed
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills; high attention to detail
  • Ability to think quickly, prioritize, and troubleshoot under high stress situations 
  • Prior experience providing faculty and student support in a classroom setting, Help Desk or end-user support experience, or AVIXA CTS certification preferred
  • Prior experience with data cleaning and/or Salesforce CRM preferred

Work Schedule

Seasonal Work Schedule

  • 3–18 June (2 weeks plus prep and breakdown days)
  • 8–16 July (1 week plus prep and breakdown days)
  • 22 July–6 August (2 weeks plus prep and breakdown days)

This position has flexibility in scheduling the hours and days of the week the work is to be performed. Up to 40 hours of work may be scheduled between 7:30am and 7:00pm. Exact work schedule is to be determined together with supervisor to jointly provide full coverage for sessions (course activities run Sunday evening through Friday afternoon; most Saturdays will require little or no coverage). Availability for full period is preferred, but those who can only work some of the weeks will be considered.
