Description

The Haven is pleased to announce the Housing Navigator position. The Housing Navigator works closely with prospective property owners and managers to promote permanent housing opportunities for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. This involves outreach/education of potential clients and community partners regarding the nature and scope of the Haven’s housing programs and services, most specifically the Rapid ReHousing program. The Housing Navigator also works closely with clients to assist in the housing search process, application, and move-in process.

Job Duties

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains a relationship with engaged property managers/owners and establishes new relationships with those interested in providing housing for people experiencing homelessness.
  • Establishes, updates, maintains and communicates a list of available housing opportunities at least twice per week.
  • In consultation with the Rapid ReHousing Administrator, assigned Case Manager, and the client, determine housing barriers, preferences, needs, and goals.
  • Ensure effective service delivery by notifying Case Managers of all housing opportunities and coordinating individualized housing plans with clients and their assigned Case Managers
  • Assist clients directly with visiting prospective units as a part of housing search, completing housing applications, speaking and engaging with landlords and property managers, providing transportation to housing-related appointments as necessary, interpreting leases, and understanding tenant rights and responsibilities.
  • Networks and collaborates with area housing resources and maintains a presence at all Community Case Review and Service Provider Council meetings.
  • Consistently meets all assigned outcome goals with respect to number of rental property contacts, number of new rental property owners/managers engaged, number of people served, and number of people moving into permanent housing
  • Prepares materials for making presentations to realtors, property managers, and/or property owners.
  • Field inquiries from prospective property owners to provide information on our area’s housing assistance programs.
  • Mediate with landlords, troubleshooting housing-related difficulties with their tenants and providing assistance as necessary to maintain housing tenancy.
  • Complete required housing inspections for prospective units as necessary
  • Familiarity with current housing market information, housing trends and available affordable housing resources.
  • Knowledge of effective business/professional contact techniques.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Skills Required

Qualifications/Skill Required

  • Must have transportation to conduct job related travel
  • 3 years of related professional experience strongly preferred
  • Experience working with households experiencing homelessness strongly preferred
  • Experience working with landlords and property managers strongly preferred
  • Excellent emotional intelligence, cultural awareness, and sense of humor
  • Inclusive, self-directed, adaptable, agile, and flexible
  • Proven ability to work well with others, including community leaders, elected officials, a diverse collection of team members, and people experiencing extreme poverty
  • Awareness of the issues people experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity face
  • Non-profit experience, preferably working with marginalized populations
  • A successful project management portfolio
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Strong collaborator and meeting facilitator
  • Understanding of Trauma-Informed Care principles
  • Familiarity with affordable housing issues and Housing First approach to homelessness
  • Personal experience of homelessness a plus but not required
  • Comfortable with computers and able to learn new software programs

Work Schedule

Monday – Friday / 9am – 5pm
