Description

Virginia Organizing accepts grants and donations under our 501c3 tax-exempt status on behalf of other groups (just under 50 groups currently) so they can focus their time, resources, and energy on their missions.  This Joint Plan of Work (JPW) system is more than a fiscal sponsorship: It leverages a tremendous amount of social justice and environmental work while also providing a funding stream that covers all our administrative costs and also supports some of our core organizing work. We have staff who take care of payroll, benefits, and other administrative services for these groups. You can see a list of JPW organizations at https://virginia-organizing.org/community-partners/.

We are looking for a Director of Programs for the Joint Plan of Work system to drive the day-to-day operations. The job will also include some other administrative tasks.  Specifically, your work will include:

Job Duties

Day-to-day operations of our Joint Plan of Work program:

  • Screen prospective JPW/MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) groups and assess if they are a good fit for the program
  • Assist groups to enter into a JPW/MOU with Virginia Organizing
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with JPW/MOU groups
  • Set up new JPW/MOUs in our administrative systems, coordinating with the Director of Finance and Administration and the Grassroots Fundraising Coordinator
  • Stay in close communication with and steward JPW/MOU programs
  • Lead on day-to-day troubleshooting with JPW/MOU groups, typically focused on employee relations, fundraising, contracts, reviewing grant proposals and grant agreements
  • Track the JPW/MOU lobbying expenditures, board changes, and other aspects of their operations
  • Compile the JPW/MOU Annual Reports and Mid-Year Reports for the Virginia Organizing State Governing Board
  • Coordinate the JPW/MOU annual renewal process, or ending of the contract

Office management and ad hoc projects:

  • Other tasks as determined by the Executive Director and Director of Finance and Administration

While this is not essential to the job, we have a preference for hiring someone who is interested in growing with the position and taking on increasing responsibility, including driving the overall program strategy.

Depending on skill and interest, in the future, the Director of Programs could also develop a long-term strategy for the JPW/MOU program; coordinate a joint foundation fundraising strategy for JPW/MOU groups; lead trainings that support the growth and organizational infrastructure for JPW/MOU groups (i.e., developing an advisory committee of board of directors); and lead other activities that would otherwise support JPW/MOU groups.

Skills Required

Driven by a commitment to Virginia Organizing’s vision for a more just Virginia, you believe that people who are most directly affected by public issues should have a seat at the table. You are passionate about social justice and environmental issues. You want to use your critical thinking and interpersonal skills to help build a powerful statewide organization.

Successful applicants will also have:

  • Experience working with people across racial, economic, and cultural lines in a variety of organizational settings;
  • Ability to work independently, which includes managing your own work schedule, setting priorities, and accomplishing long-term goals;
  • Excellent attention to detail;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Strong personal organizational skills; and,
  • Computer skills (Google Suite, Microsoft Office).

Work Schedule

40 hours a week, but flex time is a part of the job.
