Description

We are looking for an energetic and committed assistant kitchen manager to join our team. Come join a lively, team-oriented environment where you can exercise your culinary creativity while providing a vital service to those experiencing food insecurity.

The Haven is a multi-resource day shelter in downtown Charlottesville, VA. We offer a welcoming and safe space to anyone in need, and we’re open every morning, 365 days a year. Our mission is to end homelessness in the greater Charlottesville community. Motivated by radical hospitality, we strive to be the point of entry for people seeking stable housing. We open the doors wide for any and everyone, no matter their circumstances.

 

Job Duties

BASIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operate the kitchen at the Haven to provide a nutritious and delicious breakfast meal for 50-75 guests
  • Assist in the creation, planning, and execution of programming in the kitchen
  • Supervise and support volunteers in the making of breakfast 
  • Ensure the safety and cleanliness of the kitchen at all times, maintaining standards that meet the requirements of the Virginia Department of Health 
  • Monitor kitchen appliances and notify supervisor of necessary maintenance
  • Sort and distribute donations from various suppliers and the food bank
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of procedures and protocols necessary to operating the Haven 
  • Have a close understanding of our inventory needs and notify supervisor when restocking is needed

  • Ability to provide clear direction and instruction to volunteers
  • Ability to work well under time pressure
  • Ability to improvise and adapt to changing circumstances
  • Patience and understanding for volunteers and guests
  • Experience preparing large scale meals
  • Reliable, detail-oriented and organized 
  • Physical stamina — for example, carrying large boxes and standing for long periods
  • Strong support system and ability to process stress

*must have a valid driver’s license

Work Schedule

15-20 hours per week; Breakfast shifts between 5:30am-10:30am and possibility for additional daytime hours
