Quick Guide to Leveraging University Resources

On April 5th, CNE hosted "Leveraging University Resources." This workshop provided an overview of opportunities available to nonprofits and a panel discussion of best approaches for navigating University resources. Below are a few great resources and contacts coming out of the session.
LEARNING IN ACTION WEBSITE
Designed to be a portal for connecting students, faculty and the community. Nonpropfits can access a listing of student organizations, as well as post events and internship opportunties.

COMMUNITY RELATIONS
The Community Relations Office engages in outreach efforts that include: recycling valued items, such as food and household goods;promoting community outreach that helps residents know about and benefit from the University’s programs and services; engaging in active communication with neighborhood associations, particularly those adjacent to the University; and serving as a “front door” to the University by acting as an information and referral center.
Day in the Life
This program connects students with local youth for tutoring and mentoring. This program helps local youth set goals, increase self-esteem, and build confidence to pursue higher education.
Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign (CVC)
CVC connects state employees with over $1,300 participating charities to enable giving. Participating charities focus on health and human services, animal welfare, environmental and/or historical restoration, preservation or conservation, and medical research.

MADISON HOUSE
Each week more than 3,000 University of Virginia student volunteers serve as tutors, construction workers, day care supporters, patient service representatives, role models, and peer counselors. Each program has student directors that work five to ten hours every week to organize their programs and train and coordinate their volunteers to ensure that Madison House continues to provide valuable service to the community.

NONPROFIT LAW CLINIC
Nonprofit Law Clinic, in partnership with CNE and the Legal Aid Justice Center connects law students with local nonprofits to advise them in a yearlong Legal Health Check-up Program. Short term legal projects are also periodically accepted

THE CHARLOTTESVILLE INSTITUTE
The Charlottesville Institute seeks to make the needs of the Charlottesville community more visible to the University and make UVA resources more accessible to better the local community.

UNIVERSITY CAREER SERVICES
UCS highlights internship and employment opportunities for students, nonprofit can post postions on their website through CAVLink.

UNIVERSITY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM(UIP)
UIP brings together local organizations and students for an internship experience. Interns are available for the summer semester or for a fall/spring placement. Nonprofits must apply to participate in the program.

YOUTH-NEX: UVA CENTER TO PROMOTE EFFECTIVE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Through focused research, training and service this trans-disciplinary center seeks to promote healthy youth development through building evidence-based and data-driven programming for youth. They are available to consult to rigorously test effectiveness of programming, initiatives, and policies to improve implementation and create sustainable change.
