Each year, the UVa Law School’s Nonprofit Clinic, in cooperation with CNE and the Legal Aid Justice Center, offers a free legal health check-up program to CNE member nonprofits. Application season is open now for the 2012-2013 academic year.
Participating nonprofits are assigned to a law student for the year. Under attorney supervision, the law student reviews and provides confidential input regarding a wide range of legal and compliance issues. Based on their review of the organization’s documents, attendance at board meetings and interviews of key personnel, the students provide the organization with a series of written memoranda analyzing the organizational documents, charitable solicitation practices and tax exempt status, including suggestions for updating documents and implementing “best practices” generally. These memoranda can help participating organizations confirm they are in compliance with applicable laws and identify areas where organizational documents may need updating to reflect changes in the law.
Participating organizations provide the Clinic certain background documents and information, and provide opportunities for students to observe the operation of the entity, including attending board/committee meetings and interviewing the executive director. Nonprofits are considered clients of the clinic and documents and observations are kept in confidence. Participating organizations must attend a short Q&A session on August 23, 2012 from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at CNE.
Deadline is August 17, 2012. APPLY NOW!
