Position Description
The Technical Director oversees all technical production elements for the company, including sets, lighting, sound, and props. With a primary focus of teaching, mentoring, and engaging volunteers at all levels, the Technical Director also serves as the company’s master carpenter for all shows and events. This extremely physically active position has very little desk time, but also carries the responsibility for building all financial and human-hours budgeting to realize all theatrical designs.
Skills Required
Essential duties, Production & Events:
• Understand all aspects of production to facilitate technical needs throughout the build, rehearsal, technical rehearsal, running, closing, and strike of each production or special event
• Maintain clean and organized shop areas (costume, props, lighting, and scenery) and theater and rehearsal areas and oversee care and security of all company equipment and resources
• Attend and participate in production, staff and design meetings for both mentoring and budgeting
• Approve final designs (ensuring that all designs will be fully realized on time and on budget)and coordinate with the Production Manager and Artistic Director before implementation
• Schedule tech calls for all productions/events and collaborate with the Director of Volunteer Programs to recruit and schedule volunteer labor
• Serve as company master carpenter for all productions, and recruit a volunteer master carpenter for individual projects when appropriate, available, and needed
• Climb around the theater often to do work high in the air (work that is too dangerous for volunteers) while adhering to safety protocols
• Assess the skills of all incoming volunteers and provide opportunities for teachable and motivated volunteers to increase their skillsets within Live Arts and facilitate quarterly training sessions for volunteer technicians
• Participate in the season planning process in collaboration with the Artistic Director with a specific eye on feasibility of realizing needs of the productions within the available resources of Live Arts
Essential duties, Volunteers:
• Welcome every volunteer technician who participates in builds and hangs and invite them to engage in present and future projects as appropriate
• Recruit new volunteers everywhere you go and assist in recruitment events as needed
• Serve as a motivator for all Live Arts volunteers, including attending all opening nights, recognition events, parties, and receptions
• Collaborate with the entire Live Arts team to create a culture of volunteerism, consistently advocating in support of our most valuable personnel resource
• Support the members of the Live Arts Board by identifying areas of interest at Live Arts in which to become involved
• Develop meaningful and positive supervisory relationships with all volunteers
• Teach and mentor
Essential duties, Safety:
• Provide and maintain a safe working environment, including managing and providing training, equipment, record keeping, and incident reporting
Administrative Functions:
• Accurately budget and track all expenses in a timely manner in collaboration with the Executive Director and the Finance & Development Assistant
• Assist in the tracking and reporting of volunteer engagement
• Participate in weekly staff meetings
• All other duties as assigned
Qualifications required:
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience in technical theater or design with demonstrable expertise in theatrical carpentry, electrics & sound, set dressing, and props
• Prior employment experience in a not-for-profit organization with volunteers
• Prior volunteer experience with various organizations, including experience managing volunteers
• Willingness to collaborate with a tight-knit team
• Must be passionate about theater, education, teamwork, and creating a positive and exciting workplace
• Must be able to climb, be comfortable with heights, and able to lift at least 75 pounds
• Must have a ready sense of humor
